As we are mostly ignorant about how the formula for search engine rankings works, we do know that it depends on how many “votes” you have out there on the web. These votes are counted as back links. Think about it, when you come across something you like and you want others to know about it too, what do you do? You link to it! Which is why the search engines regard these so highly. While your ultimate objective is to get others to link to you, it is possible for you to manage things yourself for the time being.

Here are a few of the best strategies available for building back links to raise your blog’s profile so that it can attract the attention of the search engines.

Writing and Submitting Articles

When you write and submit articles, you are laying a solid foundation for building back links! Article sites such as EzineArticles.com and GoArticles.com let you post your articles with a link back to your blog. The implications of this are great because these particular sites are regarded highly for the quality of their content, and you get to share in their quality readership. Moreover, there is no limit to the number of articles you can write and submit. The great thing about this also, is that you can submit identical articles to various sites, or readjust a few phrases and sentences, and submit them again as completely unique articles.
Leaving Comments on People’s Blogs

Remember that one important essence of blogging is your involvement in the community. When you leave comments on people’s blogs, you not only earn recognition from their readers for making known your presence through your writing, but also, you are building back links to your blog! Remember that some of these links are regarded as “nofollow”, meaning that the search engines may not pass along ranking or “juice.” That is understandable since the algorithms are ever changing. However, these links are a great thing because they are so highly targeted.
Writing Guest Posts

Another great strategy is to write guest posts for other niche blogs. Two things which result from you doing this are: you earn respect and gratitude from those to whom you give a day off from blogging because of your guest post, and you provide a fresh outlook to the readers on a subject they love. It’s a great strategy because just by writing an extra post for the day, you get a back link to your blog.
Using Social Bookmarking Sites

Still another way you can build back links is to bookmark your sites. Despite the rumours doing the rounds that bookmarking may not be regarded as highly in the future as at the present time, it still makes your presence known to the search engines for fast indexing. However, by being selective in ensuring that you bookmark only high quality sites, you will reap the benefit of those back links too.
Paying for Links

While there are various ways you can pay for links, it is in your interest to remember that Google and other search engines don’t hold this in very high regard, because it is like someone “thumbing their nose” at their algorithms. To do or not to do, the choice is yours. This method can be quite effective, provided you do not overdo it and become too conspicuous. To do this, you can contact people directly, or work through link exchange networks.

Back links to your blog are similar to the arteries in your body. They carry the lifeblood that nourish your blog, and ultimately fill your bank account. So if you want to be ranked highly by the search engines, learn all the different methods of building back links to your blog, and by adding a few at a time, they will build up massively over time.

A a good overview of backlinking… these are great methods to get your blog or website up in the rankings. Personally I would never pay for links when promoting a new blog or site, there is much more value to be gained in writing articles and posting on blogs and forums.
